Toxic OTT rights see reported drop from Rs 200 crore to Rs 30 crore following box office failure

Reports suggest that makers of Yash’ Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups are yet to sell the digital rights of the film as OTT platforms have slashed their offers to less than half of what the makers wanted after the film’s disappointing run at the box office. The makers were initially expected offers north of Rs 200 crore but sources claim that the platforms are offering anywhere between Rs 20 crore to Rs 30 crore .

Made on an estimated budget of Rs 500 crore, Toxic was released on August 26 and directed by Geetu Mohandas. The gangster flick opened impressively at the box office but dipped drastically due to poor word-of-mouth. Globally, Toxic has earned Rs 337.80 crore net as of day 12 of its run while India nett collects Rs 245.75 crore.

According to Bollywood Hungama, a source quoted “The Toxic team had an offer of Rs. 150 crores from a leading platform but the demand from the team was a lot higher, north of Rs. 200 crores.” The source further shared, “Yash was extremely confident that Toxic will give blockbuster business in theatres and that will automatically increase the post theatrical OTT prices to Rs. 200 crore plus.”

He added, “But whatever we see happening is exactly opposite, the digital players have lowered their offers and are now offering anything between Rs. 20 to 30 crore for the post theatrical streaming rights for all languages.”source Bollywood Hungama added.

OTT platforms slashed offers

Due to the film’s disappointing run, OTT platforms have reportedly slashed their offers dramatically. Among all the platforms, Zee5 is said to have given the highest offer of Rs 30 crore for Toxic’s digital rights. The satellite rights of the film are also expected to give the makers little to no recovery as the content is majorly centred around adults.

The makers are now reportedly looking forward to creating a completely new edit just for the OTT release. The source informed, “The makers are now contemplating a completely new edit for the digital version with the hope of fetching a bigger amount than what’ staying on the table.”

“The discussions are underway to see if we can cut down on our loses, one of which is a new cut for OTT.” Yash’ Toxic OTT rights have yet to be officially sold. The film was certified ‘A’ by the Central Board of Film Certification.
