Nani Questions Why Pan-Indian Label Is Applied Only to South Indian Films, Not Bollywood Hits

Actor Nani recently challenged the concept of the term ‘pan-Indian’ films by questioning why films dubbed as such are only made in South India and make it big across India while films from other industries like Hindi don’t get the tag.

During a promotional event for his upcoming film The Paradise, Nani addressed the topic while speaking at a press conference in Chennai on Thursday.

Telugu cinema’s newest superstar Nani questions Pan India movie theory
“Don’t call my film pan-Indian because I really don’t want any film to be called pan-Indian,” Nani told media reporters. “If Hindi film does well in Telugu, Tamil or Malayalam version they are not called pan India they are still called Hindi films.” He cited examples of SRK’s Jawan and Pathaan which released in multiple languages and did extremely well in Tamil and Telugu.

“We don’t call Jawan or Pathaan pan-India but if a Telugu film performs well at the pan India level they call it a pan-India film,” he said.

Why Call It Pan-Indian Then?
Continuing further on his thoughts on Hindi films being dubbed pan Indian when they become successful outside of India, Nani questioned why the same term is not used for Hindi films when they become successful across India. “Why do we introduce this term for South Indian films? Why not introduce this for Hindi films?” he questioned.

Reaching Audiences Without Labels

The actor also made it clear that him not wanting his films to be referred to as pan Indian does not mean he wishes to limit the reach of his films to just the Telugu audience. “I will definitely try to reach Tamil, Hindi audiences, Malayalam audiences and Kannada audiences. This process will always continue,” Nani said. “I don’t want people to put those tags on my films that’s all.”

I can’t stop people from calling my film Pan India if they want to. But the terminology itself doesn’t make sense to me. But it will still be used. I can’t do much. I can only request..!

While speaking to the media, Nani said even though he does not like the term pan Indian for films, he cannot stop people from using it. “I can’t stop people from using it but that phrase doesn’t make any sense to me,” he said.

In a social media post earlier in the week as he addressed the whole topic, Nani said that every Indian language film deserves to be recognized as such and gave the example of RRR and Kantara asking if people would call those films Tamil just because of the reach it gained in the state.
“I want EVERYBODY to know that THE PARADISE is a TELUGU film. In the same context, I want THE PARADISE to be RECOGNISED as a Telugu film,” he wrote.

So when will we see Nani’s latest?

The Paradise will release on September 24, 20with the film premiering on September 23. The film got an ‘A’ from the Central Board of Film Certification and has a running time of 2 hours and 49 minutes.
Earlier this week, Nani confirmed that there will be no trailer released for the film as of now. “We all know that post-production of the film is going on right now. There are so many teams working hard at this moment to give you a good film,” Nani said. “If we release a trailer now, it has to be big. So big that we have to stop post-production for some days to work on the trailer.”

While speaking to media persons in Hyderabad on Monday, he confirmed that the film will release in multiple languages including Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, English, Spanish, Bengali, Kannada and Malayalam but confirmed that Telugu is their main focus.

“So please don’t say that this film is pan India. Along with Telugu, it will be released in some other languages as well. For us Telugu is definitely our prime target but I hope people from other languages do watch Paradise and enjoy the film,” Nani said.
